Abstract: The construction sector is recognized as one of the most important activities for social and economic growth. But, also, is a potential generator of environmental impacts, either by consumption of natural resources, the modification of the landscape or the generation of waste, whose disposal is generally inadequate. The amount of solid waste has increased significantly, due to steady population growth and industrial development, affecting both fauna, the flora and often causing changes in the ecosystem and ecological disasters. In this context, this work a preliminary diagnosis of the current situation of the Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) in the municipality of Guaíba was conducted in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, aiming to identify the generation, transportation, use and characterization of solid waste. The survey was done in 13 districts, chosen to locate the largest number of buildings in progress and places of irregular depositions of RCD. It was found that the RCDs were generated primarily by new construction, renovations and followed by the demolition of buildings. Different materials were found in RCDs, such as ceramics, cement, mortar incorporated into the ceramic, brick, concrete, wood, paper, cardboard, plaster, earthenware, metal and plastic. There, in the city, a landfill to receive this material, whose operating license expires in 2014 The collection and transport of RCDs, the buildings to the landfill, have been conducted by two licensed companies through pickup trucks with buckets 4,5m³, but observed very clandestine storage in neighborhoods listed in the survey. Noted the need to implement a Plan of Construction Waste Management, under the standards established by CONAMA.
