This research presents a study in the perception of teachers on the role of the school in the life of children in institutional care situation. It is linked to the research line of Teacher Education, theories and educational practices of the Graduate Program in Education of Unilasalle. The subjects were teachers of the first cycle of literacy , the state schools of the city of Porto Alegre / RS, which meet in the classroom, children aged 6 to 11 years old who are accommodated in residential shelters under FASC's care. Data were collected from observations and semi-structured interview. Here is the profile of teachers, the their training teachers, the teaching methods used in the classroom by them, what the teachers know about the reality of children cared for institutionally and how interpersonal relationships occur at school. The following scholars were the ones chose to dialogue through this work: Nóvoa (1995, 2009), Tardif (2002), Imbernon (2010), Libâneo (2010), Yus (2002), Silva (2008), Cavalleiro (2006), among others. The research is qualitative with content analysis according to Bardin (1994). The teachers unanimously report the absence of the family as the main factor for "school failure", in addition to the host condition not guarantee rights related to affectivity favoring an effective development of self-esteem. Given the fragility in which relationships are established with the foster children often due to the loss of family reference, sharing of material goods, lack of individuality and privacy in the look in their subjective needs school performance becomes impaired. We believe that the factors that interfere with the educational process of foster children is related to the initial and continuing teacher education, the logic of the literacy challenge responsible teachers, lack of sociability of children admitted to the other by differences, the lack of dialogue between the teachers and social educators, teaching misinformation regarding the reality of institutionalized children or the prevalence of common sense while guiding factor of teacher practice. The role of the school in the life of these children is still unknown, since the teachers have no conviction regarding their roles with them.
